In collaboration with:

Purpose:

Viet Vote San Diego curated an immersive experience on March 13th, 2023 at the Mingei Museum. Where community members and allies came together to enjoy the array of cultural foods and learn about cultural folklore, values, and identities from each member of our diverse San Diegan Asian American community.

Sharing Our Roots consisted of three components:

Sharing Our Roots: Cultural Identities

These stories allowed community members and attendees to delve into the rich cultural backgrounds of our Asian-American community members, shedding light on their journeys and the experiences around navigating both the generational and cultural bridges.

Sharing Our Roots: Folklore and Storytelling

These folklores and storytelling from different Asian-American communities allowed for the cultivation of a safe and engaging space that celebrated the shared heritage and fosters meaningful conversations that bring us closer together.

    About the Collaborating Organizations:

Karen Organization of San Diego (KOSD)

Karen Organization of San Diego was founded by grassroots community organizing efforts. In 2008, Karen community leaders had meetings to find ways to support the Karen and other refugee families from Burma who had been struggling to adjust their lives upon their arrival in San Diego.

    Asian Solidarity Collective (ASC)

Asian Solidarity Collective (ASC) is a grassroots movement and power-building organization in San Diego activating Asian American communities and moving them into action to create profound radical, sustainable and fundamental change in the world through organizing, community care and personal ecology.  ASC’s work includes civic engagement & policy, political education, transformative leadership development, community building, and collective action.

Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA)

Founded, led, and staffed by refugees, they are uniquely situated to use relational organizing to bring community into a pathway of ongoing engagement and indigenous community leadership development. They fight to advance the full economic, social, & civic inclusion of refugees in the San Diego region, throughout California, and across the country. They envision a world where refugees are connected global leaders building trans-continental movement work to advance meaningful freedom for all.
